The owner of the store told me it is 100% synthetic (I asked). That's a myth often promoted at many auto parts stores.Īs to NAPA getting sued? For what? If they sell an oil that meets the specs written on its label - how are they to blame?īy the way - I bought some Castrol Snytec at NAPA recently. All API oil rating are not backwards compatible. By the way, I went 2 miles down the road and got my Gl-1 oil at Tractor Supply. The owner of the store told me there is NO such thing. I recently tried to buy or order some GL-1 trans oil at the NAPA in Alpena Michigan. That and a general lack of knowledge I've found at many NAPA stores. The issue it often what they have in stock in the shelf. To the converse - a good HD off-road oil with a high level of ZDDP is indeed "substandard" for use in diesel cars and trucks with modern emissions systems.Īnd to be clear - you can order many other oils through NAPA. That also includes many cars and trucks made with flat-tappets. The newest emissions-compliant oils ARE indeed substandard when it comes to use in many older and/or HD machines. Thus most NAPA stores I've been too push the automotive lines of oil - NOT oils well suited for HD off-road stuff. "Substandard" without proper context has no useful meaning. NAPA switched to Deka for many of their HD batteries. That's what NAPA and Sears did recently with the Exide battery company. When they find out they are selling substandard parts - they often change suppliers. I've bought many "substandard" parts at NAPA and other parts resellers. No, not all oil is the same, but if it meets API specs the same as any other oil, they are equivalent.Īs far the NAPA oil, I highly doubt that NAPA would want the resulting lawsuit, and bad publicity from selling a substandard. But the same oil company that bottled the store brand oil, also bottled about 3 other brands of oil that we carried, and countless others that we did not. Same thing, people didn't want the "inferior" oil. We also sold oil in our own bottles with the store brand on them. Of course, they had no problem buying the twice as expensive well known name brand filter right next to it, and guess who manufactured that filter for that company, and about 20-30 others? Never could get some people past the idea that they were inferior. Years ago, I worked at a large auto parts chain, and we sold what people thought was an inferior barnd of oil filter. Aside from that, NAPA does not make oil, they have it made by someone else, who undoubtedly makes it for a lot of other people as well. I think the only way you will get rid of all the moisture is to run the crawler and get the oil warm.Īs far the NAPA oil, I highly doubt that NAPA would want the resulting lawsuit, and bad publicity from selling a substandard. Valvoline Blue and it's got the low anti-wear package and I would not use it in a tractor. My local NAPA is having a 15W-40 diesel oil sale right now. Maybe Deere has a 15W-40"fits-all" oil now with the proper friction modifiers for wet-clutches. Both say nothing about using motor oil in the HL-R trans or steering clutches. In regard to your 455D? I have a 455E and a 450C manual. In 1984 -just about all diesel rated oils had better protection then those do now sold for on-road use. Off-road and racing oils still have the high level of protection, where-as many emissions-certified diesel oils sold at chain stores like NAPA do NOT. In general, oil has not gotten better by "leaps and bounds." Most over-the-counter motor oils have less anti-wear protection - not more then they did 5-40 years ago. Since 1984, oil quality has increased by leeps and bounds. For my 1984 John Deere 455D it reads in my owners manual to use 15W40 in the engine, transmission, hydraulic system and both steering clutches. In comparison, with a 5 string bass, you have the D note on your 5th string meaning you can avoid tunning your bass to a drop tuning. With a 4 string, you would have to tune down to Drop D or bring another bass guitar in Drop D. Benefit #2 – You Have Access to Drop DĪnother example, let’s say your band plays a specific song in Drop D. In comparison, with a 5 string bass, you have the Eb note on your 5th string meaning you don’t have to tune down your bass guitar. With a 4 string, you would have to tune down to Eb. Benefit 1# – You Have Access to Ebįor example, let’s say you turn up for some session work and the guitarist plays in Eb. This can be a bit complicated and frustrating. This is good because tuning to an unfamiliar tuning can skew your understanding of where all the notes are on the fretboard. It means that all of the strings can remain in standard tuning as these notes correspond to the most common tunings in western music. With access to the important notes such as Eb, D, and C# on the low B String. Five String Pro #2 – Don’t Have to Re-Tune Therefore a 5 string bass gives you these notes in a lower register while remaining in standard tuning. On a 4 string, to achieve the desired low notes in a low register, the only option would be to tune down the strings to Drop D or Eb.īut as mentioned, you would then have to transpose your memorized scale patterns and key positions on the fretboard which is inconvenient. However, because they are only available in a ‘higher register’ (further down the neck) they sound too ‘bright’ and ‘piercing.’ Whereas playing them in a low register they sound ‘deeper,’ ‘warmer.’ as a bass should sound. Of course, you do have these notes available on a 4 string bass in standard tuning. These ‘low notes’ essentially ‘fills in the gaps’ that a 4 string in standard tuning can’t produce in a ‘low’ and ‘deep-sounding’ register.Įssentially a 5 string bass gives you these important low register notes while the other strings can remain in standard tuning. Allowing your memorized scale patterns, keys, and note positions on the fretboard to remain unaffected. Why? These low register notes correspond to the most common tunings including Eb, D, and C#. Now, these five additional ‘low notes’ mentioned above are absolutely critical to the function of a 5 string bass. This means the extra B string allows for five additional ‘low notes,’ being the: Whereas on a 5 string bass standard tuning is B-E-A-D-G. On a regular 4 string bass standard tuning is E-A-D-G. To understand the function of a 5 string bass first let’s compare the tunings… If you didn’t know already an extended lower range means that you have more access to low registry notes on the same instrument. So with a 5 string bass, what is the function of the extra string? And what are the benefits of this setup? Five String Pro #1 – Extended Lower Range In comparison, a 5 string bass has an extra string allowing an extended lower range to play notes in lower keys and the choice of more scales, chords, and arpeggios but has a wider neck and a heavier instrument.Ĭost 3% – 10% more than four-string version (same model)Īs we all know, all bass guitars in standard tuning are tuned exactly an octave lower than regular 6 string guitars. What is the difference between a 4 string and 5 string bass guitar?Ī 4 string bass has a narrower neck, wider string spacing, and is easier to play. These include the function, benefits, pros & cons, and how to decide if a 5 string bass is the ideal instrument for you. My valuable post will answer the key differences between a 4 and 5 string bass. I was kind of taken aback by it, in fact, because I’ve had the expression before and dismissed it. I did find one dram I didn’t mind in all this chaos. In the end, I still ranked them all by taste. Then the Fire and Red Stag were like a “Wild Card” round. I did the same with the apple expressions. I tasted the honey bottles against each other and chose one as a winner. I’m tasting six bottles staring with Jack Daniel’s and Jim Beam’s honey and apple expressions plus JD’s Fire (their cinnamon expression) and Beam’s Red Stag (their cherry liqueur infused with bourbon). The whiskeys themselves are already sweet enough, they don’t need help from me. So be patient with me if you feel me having to stretch to find positive things to say throughout this blind tasting. Speaking generally, I find that almost all flavored whiskeys skew towards being overly saccharine. Which made for an altogether fascinating experience. Today’s pick? Flavored whiskey from Jim Beam and Jack Daniel’s, two brands I really enjoy making a genre of whiskey I don’t particularly care for.
